Celebrating 60 years of Star Trek with a nostalgic view of the USS Enterprise model, an open book, and a themed drink, blending classic sci-fi adventure with modern fandom.

Star Trek aired three years before I was born, yet it has had a significant influence on my life. The only thing more profound and more influential has been my faith and salvation in Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior.

To me, Star Trek has long served as an earthly role model. It is more than a story or a television show. It is an aspiration for how a fallen world might come together and work for the common good. The ethos of Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets represents an ideal that a world or species might pursue on its own, if there were no grand Savior.

By that ethos, I mean the hopeful idea that people from many worlds, cultures, and backgrounds can serve together for something greater than themselves. It is built on exploration, peace, sacrifice, reason, mercy, discovery, and cooperation. It is the belief that humanity can rise above its worst instincts and become better than it is now.

I want to mark 60 years of storytelling, especially those deep episodes that ran in reruns every week when I was a kid and a teenager. What prompted this reflection, of all things, was a gift from my sister. For my birthday in April, she gave me a special Parade release dedicated to Star Trek’s 60th anniversary (see image below).

The franchise that started on September 8, 1966, inspired many real-life ideas during the 1960s and 1970s space race, and it continues to spark imagination today. I have not always agreed with the direction the franchise has taken, but with few exceptions, the United Federation of Planets and the Star Trek ethos remain largely unchanged.

Star Trek has shaped part of how I see the world, alongside my faith, and that combination still matters to me. I want to see AI grow into something like the Star Trek computer, and I look forward to seeing more of its science fiction technology come to life in ways that help humanity.

So today, on Star Trek Day, let’s boldly go where no one has gone before and celebrate the series and its ideals.

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ (4.5/5 stars)**

Overall, I liked it a lot. I think Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau do the Star Wars Universe justice. My favorite moments were probably the little guys and Grogu. I love their good baby, bad baby thing.

I also liked seeing Sigourney Weaver in it. My only negative is that it felt a little too long. I think some things would have had more room to develop if this had been a TV series. It could have fit nicely into an eight-episode run.

Pedro Pascal, as usual, did a good job. I thought they might end it here, but the way they left it means it could go either way.

TiVo, there is a name I haven't heard or thought about in a while. I used to love the hardware and platform. I thought I was the coolest tech-savvy person, and that TiVo was the way to watch TV. The tech was just so cool.

At one point, I had three of them. Most were the OTA version, though I had the cable version once with a CableCARD. That was an adventure to get working.

Over-the-air (OTA) TV has come a long way and now has so many channels. Yes, they are mainly old shows, but they are still worth watching, and it is all free. There are commercials, but I look at those as snack and bathroom breaks.

In reality, I do not watch nearly as much TV now as I used to. Most of what I do watch is through OTA, Plex, or streaming. OTA is mainly for news and the little, if any, live sports I watch. Most of the time, the TV is just on for background distraction.

So when I saw this article from Cord Cutters in my RSS feed, my first thought was that they must be desperate if they are trying to charge for their main feature, skipping ads. They do not even make hardware anymore. How and why are they still in business? I have not seen a TV with TiVo software in it.

It is one for the history books: a company that was much respected at one time, now realistically gone, or at least just a shell of its former self.

Don't waste your time. It looked interesting and had some big-name actors and actresses, but it wasn't worth it. The movie was too long for the ending it had, and the plot was weak.

Thursday, I had a silent hard drive crash. It could have happened before then, but I didn't notice it until Thursday. The drive was there last week, but Windows 11 would not recognize it. I tried it in two different computers to rule out bad cables or a motherboard issue.

I didn't realize the drive was 10 years and 3 months old until I removed it and looked at it. It is kind of like a washer, you don't think about how old it is until something happens. I had a stale backup, so I probably lost 5 to 10 percent of the stuff that was not backed up.

Then, to add salt to the wound, I got a message from someone on social media. It didn't really bother me, but it kind of did. It seemed like a gentle, polite, maybe funny attempt to sympathize and lighten the situation. At the same time, it was basically saying this is what you get with a 10-year-old drive and that I had it coming. due to its age and that was playing with fire.

With hard drive shortages and prices going astronomical, I had to buy another drive. I ordered a brand-new 10TB Western Digital drive from Amazon. When it arrived, I noticed it had been manufactured in January 2026. I installed it, but it didn't work. I tested it in two different computers, and it would not initialize at all.

So I started a return through Amazon. They offered me $80 to keep it. I spent well over $300 on the drive, so why would I want $80 to keep one that doesn't work? I need a working drive. I said no.

I know the offer was automated, but come on. Why offer me a discount to keep a dead drive? I need the drive, not the discount.

Today, I received the new drive to replace the replacement drive. It was manufactured in November 2025, and it worked fine. It worked exactly as I expected it should.

While all of this was happening, our upright freezer went on the fritz. We almost lost probably $1,000 worth of meat and frozen vegetables. Now there is another expense and another problem to deal with, all while prices are sky high.

At this point, I can only wonder what will be next.

Here is another example of what I was talking about in a recent blog post TV Isn't What It Used to Be. According to IGN, the first season came out 3.5 years ago. That is a long time to wait for a second season.

I will watch it because the first season was good. But if I miss it, I won't really care. By this point, I would have to rewatch Season 1 just to remember what happened before starting Season 2.

You're telling me it took them 3.5 years to make a second season, and it will probably only have 10 episodes? Even though they already knew the first season had done so well?

If this is the new trend, television execs need to be fired. Hire unknown actors and make series faster. If the series does well, the actors will become known.

This line in the article stood out to me:

Disney has scaled back its live-action Star Wars show production over the past couple of years, following a splurge on limited series such as Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Book of Boba Fett, both of which landed to mixed reviews. Neither Skeleton Crew nor The Acolyte made much of an impression either, with no second season planned for either series.

Skeleton Crew had potential and could have opened up a side story for Star Wars. The Acolyte, though, did deserve to be killed off, in my opinion, unless it was willing to go back to Jedi canon or fix its story.

We need better from the entertainment industry and the news industry as a whole. YouTube is doing well because it has fresh, exciting, varied content that interests people. Old TV is doing well because people can count on what they grew up with.

Happy Anniversary to Hello Games, No Man's Sky. It is 10 years, and hopefully another 10. A sequel would be great. Thanks, Sean Murray, for a great game that started rough but has grown into a masterpiece, and all free after initial purchase. I don't play as much as I used to. When I do jump back in, I am there just to explore. I don't really care if I never reach the center of the universe. Game companies can take lessons from you, the bad and the good. The good has outweighed all the bad.

I don't watch this series, though it has interested me. Still, its general theme fits what I want to talk about here.

People wonder why TV viewing and TV series are dying. Well, when you have to wait a couple of years for 8 to 10 episodes, maybe 12 if you are really lucky, that is ridiculous. From an outsider's point of view, something is clearly wrong with the TV industry.

I have said this a hundred times, and I will keep saying it: when I was growing up, TV had an actual season. You knew roughly when it would start and end, within plus or minus a week or two. There were holiday specials, and every “TV season” usually had anywhere from 18 to 30 episodes. Of course, there were exceptions, like first seasons with fewer episodes to test interest and ratings.

Now, there is no set schedule. You get 8 to 10 episodes every couple of years, and by the time a new season finally comes out, you have already lost interest. You have forgotten what happened, stopped caring, and moved on.

Then, on top of everything else, they do not even drop all the episodes at once. Come on! That is frustrating.

So I would rather wait until every episode is available, even if I have to wait a couple of years before watching something new. In the meantime, I have been watching more old TV shows. I barely get invested in new ones anymore because of these shenanigans.

Celebrating 25 years of blogging with gratitude, reflection, and a sweet slice of success surrounded by creativity and joy.

August 6, 2001, 25 years ago. I started blogging. I had a website made by Microsoft FrontPage and hosted on GTE (now Verizon) in the homepages they offered back in those days for residential customers. In fact, your ISP provided everything for you. You had so much website space and an ISP-provided email, which you lost if you changed providers. That's foreign today.

But I started on Blogger before it was owned by Google on this date in 2001. Hard to believe it's been 25 years since I started blogging. Here is my first post ever. It's even harder to imagine I've been doing this for that long. I think blogging helps me get stuff off my chest, though very, very few people read it. I like to vent, review, or just get my thoughts down about different subjects. I like to think not only have my website and my blogging improved, but my knowledge has improved. Here's to 70 more years of blogging. I hope to be blogging and to have a website of some kind, no matter how they may change in the future. So Happy Blogiversary to me.

The first thing I do when I wake up isn’t checking my phone or making coffee. It’s putting on my glasses.

This was never me. I was the opposite. I could see my phone and other things up close, such as the alarm clock. Putting on my glasses was usually the second or third thing I did because I needed them to see at a distance.

Before cataract surgery, I was nearsighted and also had astigmatism. I could see things up close without glasses, but I needed my glasses to see clearly at a distance and for almost everything else. What Antonio wrote still struck a chord with me because I could relate to nearly every word in his post.

Cataract surgery completely changed that. My new intraocular lenses (IOLs) were set for distance, so I can now see far away without glasses. However, they cannot focus up close the way my natural lenses once could, which means I now need reading glasses for my phone, the clock, and anything else nearby. As for trying to read without them, forget it. My arms are not long enough.

I go at the end of this month to get a proper prescription for reading glasses. Having worn glasses for 41 of my 57 years, I do not mind wearing them. I also agree with Antonio:

It’s crazy to think how something so small could easily become the most important thing I own.

Before cataract surgery, I could wholeheartedly relate to this. I broke my glasses once, and another time, when I was younger, I left them on top of the car after taking them off because they had fogged up. I did not realize what I had done until several minutes later.

Now that I have IOLs set for distance, losing or breaking my reading glasses would still be inconvenient, but it would no longer leave the whole world out of focus. I also no longer have to worry about my glasses fogging up when I am trying to see at a distance. That is another small change I have come to appreciate.

It is strange how a post like this can stir so many feelings in someone, but his did. That is probably because of my recent troubles with my eyes and the experience of being able to see everything in a completely new light, although still with some limitations.

Despite how important they are, they’re not something I think about once I put them on. I only notice them when I don’t have them on.

I could completely relate to this before cataract surgery. Now, however, it feels extremely strange not to wear glasses except when I am trying to read or see details up close.
